1. Operations
If you have any concerns about Polar operations, please
contact Nicky Fox (nicola.fox@jhuapl.edu)
Sun Angle Maneuver
The next Polar maneuver has been slipped and is now
scheduled for November 16, 2005.
Change of POC for the Polar FOT
John Wainwright has recently moved to EOS and therefore will
no longer be supporting the Polar mission. I am sure that we would all like to
thank him for his service with Polar and wish him well in his new endeavor.
Please direct all future FOT related enquiries to Mike
Machado. His telephone number is 301-286-0666 and his email, mmachado@pop500.gsfc.nasa.gov.
If the matter relates to the spacecraft directly, please
continue to contact Steve Hearn at 301-286-0665 (shearn@pop400.gsfc.nasa.gov)
2. MFE Data Processing Status
3. The 2006 Senior Review Proposal
The proposal was completed and delivered on October 5th.
The final version can be found at: http://pwg.gsfc.nasa.gov/polar/senior_review/2005/
We would like to thank everyone for their efforts. The
feedback we have received so far has been very positive.
We are now preparing for the presentation to the Senior
Review which will take place in the afternoon of November 14th. If
you have any suggestions for this, please direct them to Nicky Fox (nicola.fox@jhuapl.edu). The presentation itself will be structured in
order to directly address the Senior Review evaluation criteria. Specifically:
1. Relevance to
S3C and the Great Observatory
2. Impact of
scientific results as evidenced by citations, press releases etc.
3. Spacecraft and
instrument health
4. Productivity
and vitality of the science team (e.g. publishable research, training of
younger scientists, education and public outreach)
5. Promise of
future impact and productivity (due to uniqueness of orbit and location, solar
cycle phase, etc.)
6. Broad
accessibility and usability of the data
4. Resident Archives
NASA/HQ has indicated that there may be a small amount of funding available for after the end of mission for the maintenance of Resident Archives of the data at the PI institutions. This would provide a small amount of money for maintaining the hardware that serves up data and a fraction of an FTE to keep the hardware working. Chuck Holmes will be asking for input from the Polar mission in the form of a short white paper.
I have received input for this from only one PI team. I am requesting that by November 10, the remainder of the PI teams submit their ideas on what form these resident archives may take. I will compile them for the December 2 Polar telecon so that we can have a more substantive discussion on the topic.
5. PIXIE Science Report
