The recently organized National Space Weather Program seeks to achieve, within the next ten years, a synergistic, interagency system to provide timely, accurate and reliable space environment observations, specifications and forecasts. The role assigned to NASA in this national program is the pioneering work of space exploration and scientific study of the solar-terrestrial system. The end product will be an understanding of transient events, the resulting conditions of geospace, and the development of models that allow short and long-range predictions.
The current ISTP/GGS program and the GGS/SOLARMAX program will continue to assess the importance of transient features of the system. They will continue to provide comprehensive data sets for determining the accuracy and predictive capability of geospace models. It is clear that GGS/SOLARMAX will play a critical role in the National Space Weather Program. The importance that other agencies place on the role of NASA and particularly GGS/SOLARMAX in the NSWP is reflected in the letters of support submitted with this proposal. |
