The world science community has never before had a "Great Observatory" of the power, precision and sophistication of ISTP to study our most important star - the Sun - and our most important planet - the Earth. Therefore, the baseline approach to accomplishing the objectives delineated for the GGS/SOLARMAX program is to utilize the resources already developed and set in place for the ISTP program and in particular, the ISTP/GGS component of the same. Clearly, this existing "great observatory" allows us to make use of a large and significant previous investment which establishes a highly leveraged position for GGS/SOLARMAX. Spacecraft operations can be continued into the year 2001 at an extremely modest cost. We can state categorically that the GGS/SOLARMAX program will have no development costs, no startup costs, no launch costs, no delays and no cost over-runs. |
