POLAR/IMAGE Comparison Studies

Conveners: Splinter Group - Chairs: J. Green (GSFC), Stephen Fuselier (Lockheed)

The Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) is in the process of obtainning the first comprehensive multi-spectral set of global images of the Earth’s magnetosphere. The global measurements include neutral atoms (over a wide energy range), HE+ (30.4 nm) resonance scattering from the plasmasphere, polar cusp and polar cap densities, FUV aurora, and the Geocorona. IMAGE works best during storm and substorm times when ring current, aurora, and the plasmaspheric are at their most dynamic state. Full interpretation of the IMAGE data requires insitu measurements from the ISTP fleet of missions.

This splinter session will be devoted to the discussion of current correlative measurements between IMAGE and the ISTP missions and a discussion on future studies or events in which it is expected that significant progress can be made in understanding magnetospheric global dynamics.

Events are currently being selected and coordinated observations are being planned or have taken place. Please check the following web site for details of these events and campaigns: http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/

Interested participants should contact one of the organizers with details concerning the talks they wish to present or events they wish to discuss.
