During the ISTP European Workshop at RAL, Chilton, U.K. there will be a
session devoted to Substorms. This session will take place on the
afternoon of September 25. The convenors for this session request
contributions from attendees of the meeting on a range of topics and
events. At the moment two science topics and one specific interval have
been identified for this particular session.
- 1. Thin Current Sheets and Their Inward Extension. In particular we seek
contributions which detail observational, modelling and theoretical results
on the pre-onset evolution in the midtail and inner edge of the plasma
sheet.
- 2. Storm-Substorm Relationship. An excellent opportunity to investigate
individual substorms during magnetic storms is provided by the May 98 CME
events which form the basis of a separte session organised by Dan Baker and
Mervyn Freeman. We encourage attendees with relevant data sets or
modelling output to identify the individual substorm events during the
storm activity.
- 3. April 19 1998, 16 - 24 UT. During this time Geotail was well placed in
the tail, while WIND and IMP-8 were in the solar wind . The Polar imagers
were pointed towards midnight and the IMAGE magnetometers and LANL
spacecraft suggest susbtorm expansion phase onsets at 1700 UT and 1950 UT.
The CUTLASS HF radars also had good ionospheric scatter during this
interval. Again we encourage attendees with relevant data sets to
undertake a prior analysis of the data for a detailed multipoint study of
these two substorms.
The convenors invite contributions on any of these three topics and request
contributors to contact them by e-mail at the adresses below. They are
also happy to receive contributions on other topics or suggestions for
other event studies. In the case of the latter please contact the session
organisers as soon as possible so that these events can be publicised.
