In the 1930s it was realized that temperatures in the outersolar atmosphere were much higher than in the photosphere itself (!) So high, indeed (more than a million degrees), that the gaseous atmosphere was completely ionized. I.e.it was an electrically conductive gas consisting entirely of free protons and electrons.
