After 40 years of leadership and service to NASA and the Space Science Community, Bob Hoffman is planning to retire from Goddard Space Flight Center effective January 3, 2003.

In recognition of this milestone, the Laboratory for Extraterrestrial Physics is planning to hold an afternoon symposium followed by a banquet in honor of Bob and his many contributions to our community. It is tentatively scheduled to be held at or near GSFC on Friday, January 17th.

At this time we are making three requests:

1. If you think that you will attend, then please RSVP (via e-mail) to that effect.

2. If you would like to be allotted time at the Symposium to make a brief presentation regarding important events or scientific achievements in which Bob Hoffman (and you) participated, then please send me a working title, some words describing the topic, and the amount of time that you will need.

3. Although we will soon post a community-wide announcement in the SPA News, we encourage you to circulate this e-mail to other colleagues who have an interest in celebrating Bob's career and were inadvertently left off this initial announcement.

Finally, please feel free to send me suggestions, etc regarding this event and I will see that they get to the organizing committee.
