STATUS OF RE-ENGINEERING OF OPERATIONS SYSTEMS FOR POLAR, WIND AND GEOTAIL

1.  Received five feasibility studies:

            CSOC

            LASP/U. Colorado

            SPDS/NSSDC

            NSSTC (UAH/MSFC)

            SSL/UC Berkeley

2.  Received reviews of feasibility studies

3.  Summarized reviews

4.  Developed general approach

5.  Currently in discussions regarding technical approach and responsibilities

Basic conclusions to approach:

1.  Re-Engineering of a number of systems is required to bring costs to affordable levels.

2.  Modifications should be done under local Civil Service control.

3.  Management and participation is expected from SPDS/NSSDC, Code 580 (Science Data Systems Branch and Advanced Data Management & Analysis Branch) and programmers from companies associated with the systems through CSOC.

4.  Investigate several areas for potential mods:

CMS – rehost to new H/W

LZ processing – automate (and convert re NSSTC suggestion?)

NRT and QL – total review on approach, what is needed, redundancy

KP and auxiliary data products - automate

Data distribution and mass storage – including transfer of data to NSSDC

CD production – where and with what equipment

Also the MOC will investigate automated tape dumps from Polar and Wind.

5.  Keep open the option of porting of operations through LZ processing to UCB.  Different from feasibility study.
