Priority Science Operations Topic
SPOT 7: 'Collaboratory Substorm Studies'
Topic Description
The proposed campaign will involve real-time operation of various
ground instruments, including the chain of incoherent scatter radars,
hf radars, and magnetometers as well as the real time use of models
driven by solar wind and IMF inputs. The collaboratory tools will be
used by the distributed participants to view the data from the various
instruments and the model outputs for comparison. The science
objectives are to examine the high latitude ionospheric response to
changes in the solar wind, IMF and to substorm expansions. WIND
measurements of IMF and solar wind density and velocity will be used as
inputs to the real-time models. POLAR images will be compared with
ground measurements as available. Subsequent electronic workshops will
be utilized to complete the analysis of these campaign data.
Epoch/Orbit CHARACTERISTICS
WIND: in solar wind near earth-sun line.
POLAR: near appogee
Expected campaign dates are April 8,9,10
POLAR DATA REQUIRED
No special requirements
POLAR De-Spun PLATFORM OPERATIONS
When possible, would like to have imaging of auroral oval by UVI.
OTHER ISTP Missions/Instruments REQUIREMENTS
Request real-time tracking of WIND for as much as possible during campaign
