Sun-EARTH Connection Event: July 14-16, 2000
X-Class Flares and Fast moving Earth-directed CME. The aurora reached as far south
as Georgia (although not visible as during daylight) and Great Britain.

Large flares and a high speed halo CME - but no geoactivity.

1998 Events
Sun-Earth Connection Event; Sept 23-26, 1998
WIND/WAVES detected type II and III radio signatures associated with an M6.9 flare. The event reached the Earth late on September 24 and Dst reached -222 nT and the Kp index reached 9 on September 25.
Sun-Earth Connection Events; Aug 24-28, 1998
Aug 24, 22UT, X1 Solar Flare, resulting Coronal Mass Ejections reached the Earth in only 33 hours, giving a transit spped of approximately 1300 km/s - WOW !!
Sun-Earth Connection Events; Apr 29 - May 2, 1998
SOHO/LASCO has detected mulitple CMEs occurring from April 29 - May 2, 1998. The latest was accompanied by an X1 proton flare. The geomagnetic activity is expected to continue through May 5. The Kp index reached 9 early on May 4.
Sun-Earth Connection Event; Apr 15, 1998
There have been multiple CMEs above the NNW limb, apparently associated with the soft X-ray events of the past 24 hours. At least two of the CMEs had extensions that were 120 degrees putting them in the partial halo category. Further, there has been a quasi-continuous "CME" of rising, evolving arcades in the SW during this same period. The size of these CMEs is large and they are clearly from the front-side (as evidenced in EIT images). SEC/NOAA is predicting that the geomagnetic field will be unsettled for the next few days, then quiet by 19 April.
Sun-Earth Connection Event; Jan 21, 1998
There was a halo event seen in LASCO 1998.01.21, first appearing at 06:37 UT. A speed of 400 km/sec was separately measured for the leading edge at PA=180 (South Pole). SEC/NOAA are predicting a minor geomagnetic disturbance to begin early on 24 January and continue into 25 January. Maximum Kp values expected are in the 4-5 range. Tpye IIs were detected by the WAVES experiment on WIND.

The spectacular solar activity which was observed by SOHO on September 24, 1997, failed to impact the Earth, so no geomagnetic activity was observed.
Sun-Earth Connection Event: April 7-11, 1997
A flare leads to a shock wave leads to a CME...and a lot of media attention. Predictions of a storm's arrival on April 10 are stymied by a slow solar wind. But once the cloud arrives on April 11, the auroral foreworks extend all the way to Boston.

For the first time, space physicists track a magnetic cloud event from cradle to grave. ISTP observatories follow the storm from its origin as a coronal mass ejection to a "one-two punch" of Earth that pushes the magnetosphere inside geosynchronous orbit.
